URGENT FOSTER CARE NEEDED

The CIHS Shelter is looking more and more crowded each day. Unfortunately, a large number of our adult dogs have heartworm and need a foster home to start treatment!

WE NEED Foster parents for these animals, or they will remain in our care until the succumb to the disease!

The Shelter will provide you with a crate, food, bowls and medication. You will provide a nice, calm, loving environment in which the animal can recover. Most of our heartworm foster animals require treatment for a couple months, but each case is different.

For more details, or if you're interested in fostering one of our lovely canine friends, please call the Shelter on 949-1461 or email info@caymanhumanesociety.com

UPDATE - Post Hurricane Paloma

Many of our members, volunteers and friends have been wondering what the Humane Society has been able to do in response to the devastation in Cayman Brac and Little Cayman caused by Hurricane Paloma. In response, the Board of Directors and Shelter Staff would like to state the following:

1) CIHS sent over food and supplies for the Brac on the first two boats that landed!

2) CIHS coordinated with Wildlife Rescue the supply of wild bird seed and feeders for the Brac

3) CIHS has subsequently sent two large shipments of over 1500 pounds of dog, cat and bird supplies to the Brac

4) Brac Humane Society is distributing this food to all pet owners, as there is none on the Brac.

6) International Charities have been contacted for aid. Pegasus Foundation is sending funds to help cover the costs of this much needed relief effort.

7) The SMU Vet School Students have taken up a monetary collection to help support our relief efforts.

8) Cost U Less is supporting the relief efforts through a discounted price for all food going to the Brac.

9) Cayman Airways Air Cargo Staff have been extremely helpful with our large shipments to the Brac. Deliveries have been made the same day they are dropped at Cargo.

10) A donated refrigerator for Noah's Ark has been delivered to protect any medications the animals may need. (Shelter has a generator!)

11) Noah's Ark has now been used as a holding facility for two hurricanes and has survived both storms without any damage and all animals were safely returned to their owners. (Following Paloma, it was left open for an extended period, in case the need to house animals was necessary, but it was not.)

Fashion Show a Huge Success!!!

The CIHS would like to thank everyone who came out to Cocktails At Tiffany's, our annual fundraising fashion show. This event was a great success! Thanks to the silent auction, clothing sale and raffle, we were able to raise almost $25,000 for the Cayman Islands Humane Society!!! And a great number of females are happy to say that they were able to walk out of the show with gorgeous clothing at bargain prices!

We also have to boast that five out of the six dogs who participated in the show are now in their new homes! Buster flew to NYC, Molly, Steve, Shiloh and Buck are happily living right here in Cayman.

We need to add that our wonderful, gorgeous, soulful Nick is still looking for that special someone to give him a loving home...is that person you? If so, please contact the shelter on 949-1461.

Again, a big thank you to Tiffany's for the support and generous donation. Thank you to all of the event sponsors, we appreciate your support!

All who can donate time and their laundry machines are encouraged to head down to the Shelter on North Sound Road to pick up a load of towels to wash. 5th August 2008: PRESS RELEASE - GOLDEN OLDIES URGENTLY NEED HOMES

Two senior citizens at the Cayman Islands Humane Society shelter are in desperate need of a second chance and are looking for loving understanding homes in which to see out their twilight years in comfort - something both of them have yet to experience.

Dolly is a friendly, affectionate lady of approximately 10 years old - she is a beautifully brindled mixed breed with a long slender muzzle, peppered with white hair. She loves going for walks and will gently paw at the door once a leash is slipped on her in quiet anticipation of the joy to come. She is mellow and loving, a happy girl who just wants to share her life with someone special. She is polite and very well behaved. She was brought to the shelter as a stray and at her time of life what she really needs is a comfortable bed and some company now.

Jerry has suffered a lifetime of neglect and abuse from former owners, who even named him 'Garbage' because that's what they thought of him - this couldn't be further from the truth! This lad is a gorgeous dog, he is very affectionate; put your arms around him and he buries his head into the embrace for a decent snuggle! He just wants to love and be loved. Jerry has suffered from a broken leg in the past that was allowed to heal by itself, hence he walks with a hop and a limp, but he's in no pain, he just trundles right along as good as gold. He's a very well mannered affectionate canine. Jerry is approximately 9 years old and has a golden coat, with a greying muzzle.

Senior dogs make wonderful pets, they settle in very quickly, they are generally less energetic and playful than in their youth, they focus well because they are mellowed and are easy to train, and are less likely to chew!! Adopting a senior is a rewarding experience for all involved.
'Senior dogs are the hardest to rehome as people often overlook them in favour of younger healthier animals. They don't realise what wonderful companions these older dogs make, and especially dogs who have been down on their luck all their lives; they really need to be in a decent home as soon as they can, they deserve it!' stated Director Clare Hasart.

Both Jerry and Dolly have heartworm disease, the CIHS is seeking either permanent or foster homes in which these beautiful animals can enjoy some peace and quiet, and above all - love.

Anyone interested in adopting either Jerry or Dolly can contact the Humane Society on 949 1461 or visit them at the Animal Shelter on North Sound Road.

Quiz Night A Huge Success!!!

The Cayman Islands Humane Society would like to say a big thank you to CAMBIE, the Mike's Ice Group of Companies volunteer group. CAMBIE organized a quiz night fundraiser, held at Fidel Murphy's on Thursday July 3rd. 18 teams participated in the event, which consisted of 3 rounds of questions. Raffle tickets were sold for some amazing prizes such as gift certificates to The Wharf and Post Restaurant. The proceeds from this event (a whopping $1,200.00!) were split between Lighthouse School and the Cayman Islands Humane Society.

These funds will be put to quick use at CIHS, as a shelter in New York has given us the green light to expand our Puppy Transfer Program! The next transfer will take place Friday July 11th and this generous donation will fund a large portion of the trip.

We want to thank CAMBIE and Fidel Murphy's for organizing such a wonderful and entertaining evening! Also a big thank you and congratulations to all participants.

Letter to the Editor

The Cayman Islands Humane Society is deeply saddened and distressed to learn of two incidences of animal abuse over the last week. That these have happened so soon after the brutal killings of our countries precious blue iguanas deepens the Society's concern even further.

One dog on Cayman Brac was set on fire, causing extensive injuries, pain and distress coupled with a lifetime of mental anguish for the animal, who is currently recovering, and another dog on Grand Cayman who was burnt with chemicals and subsequently euthanized due to its injuries. Both of these acts of abuse are sickening.

Domestic dogs have been bred for centuries to become mans perfect companion, naturally these animals are affectionate, loyal and trusting towards humankind, the way humans treat them in return determines their individual personality.

These two animals did not deserve this kind of suffering inflicted upon them; in their innocence they have suffered tremendous pain from individuals who enjoy committing cruelty on those weaker than themselves. These individuals are deeply disturbed. In every culture we are taught right from wrong from our families, our peers, schools and faith - these particular individuals knew they were doing wrong. Studies reveal that those who inflict animal cruelty don't stop there, they are the future spouse and child abusers, our future murders and serial killers - they will commit these violent crimes over and over again, and as a community we need to stop them now. Those that know any information as to who carried out these depraved acts must report them to the RCIPS now or call 'Crimestoppers' anonymously - next time it could be your pet, your child or even you.

As a community we need to show compassion and care towards all living creatures, we need to teach our children right from wrong and flush out the abusers. There is absolutely no excuse, no reason to harm and inflict pain on anything or anyone.

Our thoughts are with the families of these two dogs, and with all the animals who have suffered abuse, are suffering now and who are yet to suffer in the future; know that you are loved as we pray for you.
